4) Recognize the addiction. A lot of addiction behaviors runs rampant because people fail to either recognize it or admit it. If it is compulsive and cannot be controlled, there is an addiction. Do not be ashamed if you have a problem. Recognizing an addiction and admitting it is the first step.

5) Deal with the guilt. Because of the behavior's content and nature, people with addictions suffer in silence because of the guilt associated with it. Deal with it by remember that underneath it, the addiction is more about emotional need than anything else.

6) Realize and identify your thoughts. Does the the behavior make you feel accepted? Does it make you feel wanted? Does it make you feel less lonely? For many addicts, its is about how they feel when they participate in any way ,their addictive behavior, or what they may be lacking that the addictive behavior fulfills. Think deep about your feeling and thoughts while you're satisfying your addiction.

7) Focus on more positive things which make you happy. Addictions tend to fill a void in those obsessed with it. Shift your mind and attention onto more positive things which fulfill you. You need to change the association of pleasure and good feeling from your addictive behavior to something more constructive.

8) Take it one day at a time. Deal with your addiction one day at a time and remember that there may be setbacks, stumbles and falls. Be patient with yourself and breaking this long time and unhealthy relationship.
9) Remember the one of the most important hurdles to overcoming or controlling an addiciton is to STOP in any way ,you participating in the addictive behavior.

10) Consider reading Gerald May's series of books on philosophy and Self-Help, to start, "Addiction & Grace".

11) Seek professional help. Seeking a counselor or therapist is a wise decision if the addiction continues. This step is repeated, having someone to whom you are accountable to and has the training to deal with your baggage and not go home with it,(like a wife, husband,friend,ect). There are many specialists who can help you with addictions before it ruins much of your life.

12) Rememember Addictions are a form of " Fake Bliss" , True Bliss, begins with "Love of Self" , refer to Christs' admonition when challenged by the Pharisees on what was the "Greatest Commnadment" .
If you are Agnostic, still recognize Fake Bliss, from the Bliss you have or wish to feel. Be Genuine.!
